RLSS BRONZE MEDALLION

This award was established 100
years ago and is regarded as the flagship award for lifesaving. The
Bronze Medallion was created to form competent levels of knowledge
combined with practical rescue skills in simulated open water emergencies.
This award can also form a section in the Duke of Edinburgh Award
Scheme as service or skill in the Physical Education component(s).
New candidates undergo around 20 hours of training prior to a formal
assessment that will incorporate the following;
Life Support techniques
Theory on water safety
Rescue principles
Practical sessions covering land based and wading rescues
Test of strength and stamina in the form of a timed swim with clothing
Rescue of struggling, distressed swimmers
Submerged casualty resuscitation rescue
Simulated incident involving rescue of 2 casualties
The minimum age of candidates is 13 years
A bronze medallion, a cloth badge will be awarded upon successful completion
of the assessment.
RLSS AWARD OF MERIT

Candidates need to be 15 years or older at the time of assessment
and is more technically demanding than the Bronze Medallion. Candidates
have to be able to swim faster and further and have extended knowledge
of all skills. A silver medallion, a cloth badge and Life Support 2
will be awarded upon successful completion of the assessment.
LIFE SUPPORT 1
This aims to establish competent levels of knowledge and skills to administer
basic Life support including diagnosis and treatment of choking, bleeding
and shock. Life Support 1 is a pre-requisite for the Bronze Medallion.
A certificate is awarded at the successful completion of the assessment
LIFE SUPPORT 2
This aims to establish proficient levels of knowledge to administer
basic life support including the diagnosis and treatment of choking,
bleeding, shock, drowning and hypothermia. Life Support 2 is a pre-requisite
for the Award of Merit. A certificate is awarded at the successful completion
of the assessment
LIFE SUPPORT 3
This aims to establish excellent levels of knowledge and ability to
administer basic life support to casualties of all ages and in a variety
of emergency situations. This is the highest level of life support accreditation.
A certificate is awarded at the successful completion of the assessment
